When I refelect on my student years so far, there is one highlight that stands put head and shoulders above the rest: my time here in Sonop and all the memories that go along with it.
Sonop is one of the oldest residences on Tuks and therefore has a very rich culture and tradition that dates back to 1916. There are only 160 men who can stay in Sonop at a time, so it is a great privilege to be part of this unique residence. The Sonop family is one who will stay with me for many years to come and for that I will be eternally grateful.
Sonop is not just an ordinary student residence. There are an awful lot of things that set Sonop apart from any other student residence in the world. The two things that stand out to me are the perseverance and mentality of our residents. The famous Sonop saying: “You will never be able to mean as much to Sonop as Sonop can mean to you” just makes me realize again that Sonop has a remarkable impact on all its members during their stay in Sonop and also in the consecutive years.
Why is Sonop the best? It is tucked into our walls here, if you walk into Sonop the place has an immediate effect on you. It is not possible to explain Sonop and all his things to someone from the outside. The following quote from CJ Langenhoven sums up a Sonopper well:
“Give me a man who says what’s true
if the devil is there,
who does what is right
if the judge is gone,
who stays true to his conscience
if he gets punishment instead of reward.”
Sonop’s four pillars are: Seniority, Loyalty, Integrity and Discipline. These values and your Sonop experience give you a secret weapon and an edge in life. Here in Sonop you become the man you have always wanted to be. Growth and development in Sonop is inevitable – as an insecure man you walk through the gates and a few years later you walk into the rest of the world as an equipped Sonop man.
